This captivating oil painting, believed to be “Phyllis” by Blanche MacArthur (fl. 1883–1904), captures a delicate moment of quiet study and reflection. The subject, a young girl, is rendered in a sentimental, Academic style popular in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
The sitter is depicted wearing a traditional white Puritan-style cap and collar over a dark, muted green dress, contrasting beautifully with her soft brown hair and contemplative expression. Her cheek rests gently upon her hand as she pauses while reading a book open before her.
