Description
19th Century French Bisque Porcelain Group “Chut Papa Dort” – Napoleon Sleeping
A charming 19th-century French bisque porcelain figural group depicting Napoleon Bonaparte asleep in an armchair, titled “Chut Papa Dort” (Hush, Papa is Sleeping). This finely modelled composition captures an intimate and humanising moment, presenting the Emperor in a domestic and tender scene rather than in formal military grandeur.
Napoleon is shown seated in uniform, resting peacefully in an ornate chair, his posture relaxed and head inclined forward. Beside him stands a young child at a small table, finger gently raised to her lips in a gesture of quiet, reinforcing the inscription “Chut Papa Dort” elegantly moulded along the base. The detailing of the uniform, chair carvings, drapery folds, and the child’s dress reflects careful craftsmanship and the refined modelling characteristic of late 19th-century French bisque production.
Executed in unglazed bisque porcelain, the soft matte surface enhances the sculptural quality of the piece, lending it a classical and refined presence. The composition exemplifies the Romantic fascination with Napoleon in 19th– century France, where he was often portrayed not only as a military leader but also as a father and contemplative figure.
Condition consistent with age, with minor surface wear as expected for a piece of this period. A highly decorative and evocative example of French historical porcelain, suitable for collectors of Napoleonic memorabilia, 19th-century ceramics, or fine bisque figural groups.
