Rare Kerala Changalavatta Oil Lamp, South India, 18th–19th Century
An exceptional and finely cast Kerala Changalavatta oil lamp, a rare and highly decorative example of traditional South Indian metalwork. This elegant form is distinguished by its elongated, wing-like arms terminating in stylised makara or bird-head finials, a motif deeply rooted in Kerala’s temple and ritual design vocabulary. The central oil reservoir is encircled by finely worked concentric ornament, rising from a stepped, tiered pedestal base of harmonious proportions.
A defining feature of the Changalavatta type is the suspended chain (changala), here retaining its original spoon-form oil feeder, used to replenish the reservoir during use. The sculptural balance between the extended arms and central bowl creates a striking silhouette, both functional and symbolic in intent.
Cast in brass or bronze, the lamp displays a rich, naturally developed patina consistent with age and use, enhancing its visual depth and authenticity. Such lamps were integral to domestic and temple rituals across Kerala, symbolising light, purity, and the dispelling of darkness.
Surviving examples of this form, particularly with intact chain elements, are increasingly scarce, making this a desirable piece for collectors of Indian antiquities and traditional metalwork.
