Victorian Admiral FitzRoy Barometer in Beech Case, 19th Century Marine Weather Instrument
This handsome Victorian Admiral FitzRoy barometer is housed in a tall glazed beechwood case and features the distinctive printed storm warning and forecasting instructions associated with FitzRoy’s pioneering work in marine meteorology. Designed for domestic and maritime use, these barometers were intended to provide early warning of storms and changing weather conditions, making them both scientifically important and historically significant.
The dial is finely printed with FitzRoy’s characteristic advisory text, including “Rising” and “Falling” weather guidance, along with directional wind indicators. Below, the thermometer remains intact and clearly legible. The tall proportions and warm-toned beech frame give the piece a strong decorative presence, making it equally suitable for period interiors, nautical collections, or scientific instrument displays.
A fine example of Victorian scientific craftsmanship and an evocative survivor from Britain’s golden age of maritime exploration and weather forecasting.
