A decorative Indian wooden elephant sculpture from Rajasthan, late 20th Century, finely carved and finished, with remnants of hand-painted, colourful polychrome decoration.
The elephant is depicted in ceremonial dress, with an ornate saddlecloth, decorative harness, anklets and a patterned head covering. Its raised, curling trunk traditionally symbolises good fortune, prosperity and protection.
The sculpture has an intentionally aged appearance, with muted grey, turquoise, blue, yellow and reddish tones that highlight the carved details. It would make an attractive addition to an Indian, Asian, ethnic, colonial-style or eclectic interior.
The piece shows age-related surface wear, rubbing, fading, small marks and losses to the painted finish, adding to its decorative character. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
