Description

Antique Copeland Parian Paul & Virginia Group Cumberworth

A beautiful antique Copeland Parian porcelain figure group entitled “Paul and Virginia”, modelled after the celebrated design by French sculptor Charles Cumberworth.

Designed in 1846, this wonderfully romantic composition depicts the young couple seated closely together upon a naturalistic rocky base. Paul tenderly presents Virginia with a small bird’s nest, creating an intimate and affectionate scene filled with youthful innocence.

The figures are masterfully modelled, with particularly fine attention given to their expressions, flowing garments, hands and the delicate bird’s nest. The unglazed white Parian porcelain has a marble-like appearance that beautifully displays the sculptural detail.

The subject is inspired by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s celebrated romantic novel “Paul et Virginie”. The story’s themes of innocence, devotion and tragic love made Paul and Virginia highly popular subjects in nineteenth-century European art and sculpture.

This is an elegant and highly decorative example of Victorian Parian ware, combining an important Copeland production with a design by a recognised nineteenth-century sculptor. It would make a distinguished addition to a collection of Copeland, Parian porcelain, Victorian ceramics or romantic sculpture.
