Beautiful Louis Philippe Ormulu mounted ebonised Portico Mantle Clock, unsigned, from the second quarter of the 19th century.

A stunning example of a 19th-century Louis Philippe Ormolu-mounted ebonized Portico Mantle Clock, likely dating to the second quarter of the 19th century. This unsigned timepiece features an eight-day counterwheel bell striking movement with an anchor escapement, regulated by a decorative ‘gridiron’ pendulum adorned with a floral rosette cast bob and a serpent-decorated yoke. The backplate is stamped 948.

The circular silvered brass dial is engine-turned, displaying Roman numerals and fitted with pierced blued steel hands, all enclosed within an ornate floral bloom cast bezel. The case is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, boasting an ogee cornice over a tablet upstand entablature. The lintel is adorned with a basket of flowers centrepiece, surrounded by inhabited foliate scrollwork.

The clock’s elegant portico design is defined by four Roman Doric columns, each topped and based with finely engine-turned gilt caps and bases. The plinth base is richly decorated with a matching foliate scroll mount, resting on a canted skirt and small compressed bun feet.
This exquisite antique timepiece comes complete with its original key and pendulum, making it a remarkable addition to any fine collection of 19th-century horology.
Size 50 cm (19.75ins) high, 26 cm (10.25 ins) width, 14,5 cm (5.75 ins) deep.
It has been in storage for several years and may need a service (most local Horologists can do this).
