This three-piece antique bronze figure of Vajrapāni captures the deity’s powerful presence and protective essence. Vajrapāni is extensively represented in Buddhist iconography as one of the earliest protective deities or bodhisattvas surrounding the Buddha. Alongside Manjushri and Avalokiteśvara, Vajrapāni symbolises one of the Buddha’s virtues: while Manjushri embodies wisdom and Avalokiteśvara embodies immense compassion, Vajrapāni represents the Buddha’s power and the power of all five tathāgatas (Buddhahood of the rank of Buddha).
One of the earliest Dharmapalas in Mahayana Buddhism, Vajrapāni also appears in the Pali Canon of the Theravada school, signifying his widespread reverence. He is worshipped in various traditions, including the Shaolin Monastery, Tibetan Buddhism, and Pure Land Buddhism, where he is known as Mahasthamaprapta and forms a triad with Amitābha and Avalokiteśvara.
Manifestations of Vajrapāni can be found in many Buddhist temples across China, Taiwan, and Japan, often positioned as Dharma protectors guarding the gates of monasteries and temples. Additionally, Vajrapāni is associated with Acala, revered as the vajra holder.
