Antique Sympiesometer Barometer Victorian J. Graham Liverpool Rosewood Nautical Instrument
This finely preserved Victorian sympiesometer was produced by J. Graham of Liverpool, a noted maker of precision scientific and navigational instruments during the 19th century. The sympiesometer was an early form of barometer, widely used aboard ships for measuring atmospheric pressure with greater responsiveness to temperature variation than traditional mercury barometers.
Housed in an elegant rosewood case with an original glazed front, the instrument features finely engraved silvered scales, a mercury thermometer, and the characteristic U-shaped liquid tube with an adjustable index mechanism. The engraved aperture and calibrated scales demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship and technical precision associated with British instrument makers of the period.
Liverpool was a major centre of maritime trade and instrument manufacture, and instruments bearing local maker marks are increasingly sought after by collectors of nautical history and scientific apparatus. Sympiesometers of this quality, retaining original components and clear maker identification, are now rare survivals.
The piece offers a strong decorative presence while retaining important historical and technical significance.
