Antique French Thermometer Gilt Wood Wall Barometer Style Hand Painted Dial Ornate Frame

Decorative Wall Thermometer
France, Late 18th – Early 19th Century
Gilt and painted wooden case with a glass alcohol thermometer

This elegant French wall thermometer exemplifies the refined decorative and scientific craftsmanship of the late 18th to early 19th century. Housed within a richly carved and gilded wooden case, the instrument is further enhanced by hand-painted floral decoration and an inscribed thermometer scale, uniting functional measurement with ornamental artistry.

The thermometer employs a coloured alcohol-filled glass tube, a method widely used during the period for accurate ambient temperature indication. The beautifully balanced Rococo-inspired frame transforms the instrument into a decorative wall object as well as a practical scientific device.

Such thermometers were intended for refined domestic interiors, where they served both as useful instruments and as expressions of taste and status. Surviving examples in this level of decorative preservation are increasingly scarce and sought after by collectors of antique scientific instruments and European decorative arts.
