Description
Victorian Mahogany Sympiesometer by T. Hemsley, Tower Hill, London – c. 19th Century
A fine and intriguing Victorian scientific instrument, this mahogany sympiesometer dates to the 19th century and was crafted by T. Hemsley of Tower Hill, London, a respected maker of precision instruments. Sympiesometers were early barometric devices, particularly favoured for maritime and meteorological use during the Industrial Revolution.
Housed in its original mahogany case with bevelled glass, the instrument features a silvered scale, a characteristic U-shaped glass tube, and a sliding indicator designed to compensate for temperature changes. The engraved barometric scale and adjustable aperture demonstrate the thoughtful engineering and practical elegance of Victorian scientific design.
For safe transport and in compliance with modern regulations, the mercury has been removed, though the instrument remains visually complete and highly evocative. Its patinated surfaces and gentle signs of age are consistent with its period and add to its authenticity and charm.
Standing approximately 53 cm (21 inches) high, this sympiesometer is both an impressive display piece and a compelling historical artefact. It would make a distinguished addition to any collection of antique scientific instruments, maritime antiques, or Victorian curiosities.
