Rare Victorian Silver Pocket Thermometer – Late 1890s

Swivel design pocket Thermometer

This exquisite Victorian pocket thermometer exemplifies the precision and craftsmanship of late 19th to early 20th-century scientific instruments, standing as a rare and beautifully preserved artifact from the golden age of technological innovation.
The thermometer is housed in a sleek, polished silver-tone metal casing, with worn sterling silver hall-marks and a finely monogrammed cartouche that add to its vintage charm. Designed with an ingenious swivel mechanism, the casing protects the delicate thermometer when not in use. Closed, it resembles a refined, compact cylinder; with a smooth twist, it reveals a beautifully engraved cover, which opens to display the finely calibrated temperature scale inside.

The interior scale is remarkably well-preserved, featuring crisp, legible markings ranging from 10 to 110 degrees. The red mercury column remains intact and fully functional—a lasting testament to the instrument’s meticulous craftsmanship.
Condition: Exceptional for its age. The swivel mechanism operates smoothly, with only minor wear, including gentle rubbing on the hallmarks, which enhances its vintage character without detracting from its appeal. To ensure safe transport, the bottom of the scale is temporarily stabilized with a small pinch of blue tack to prevent shaking during shipment.
This pocket thermometer is more than just a scientific tool—it is a tangible piece of history, reflecting the innovative spirit of the Victorian era and the meticulous engineering.
