19th Century South Indian Teakwood Jewellery or Document Box with Brass Mounts
A rare and attractive nineteenth-century teakwood box originating from South India, finely constructed from richly grained hardwood and fitted with decorative brass and iron mounts. The box is crafted from solid teakwood with a gently domed lid and sloping sides, reflecting the traditional form of travelling document or jewellery caskets produced by skilled South Indian craftsmen during the colonial period.
The exterior retains a deep warm patina developed through age and use, highlighting the natural grain and colour of the teak. The box is strengthened with hand-worked brass mounts and iron hinges, while the front is fitted with an original brass lock plate and clasp. The sturdy carrying handle on the lid suggests it was designed as a portable valuables or document box, often used for jewellery, coins, or important papers.
Inside, the box retains a small original partition at the base, further suggesting its use for organising valuables or personal items. The honest wear, surface marks, and mellow patina throughout are consistent with age and contribute to its authentic antique character. Such boxes were valued for their durability and were widely used in India during the nineteenth century by merchants and households alike.
A fine example of traditional South Indian teak craftsmanship, combining practical design with decorative metalwork, making it both a collectable antique and a charming decorative object.
