Description
This rare and beautifully executed 19th-century watercolour portrait depicts Lady Elizabeth, wife of Charles Bulmer Esq. of Saltwell Hall, County Durham. Born in 1778, Lady Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Joseph Woodhouse of Southwood, Northumberland, and is portrayed here with remarkable elegance and refinement.
The work is attributed to Edward Hastings (1781–1861), a noted artist of the period, and demonstrates his sensitive handling of portraiture. Lady Elizabeth is shown seated within a refined interior, set against a soft, atmospheric background. The artist’s delicate use of light and subtle colour creates an intimate and graceful composition, drawing attention to her calm expression and finely detailed features.
The painting is enhanced by a fine gilt frame, which complements the period character of the work and adds to its overall presence. Measuring approximately 54 x 46 cm, it displays exceptionally well and retains a strong visual impact.
Provenance further elevates the significance of this piece. It was acquired from a large private house in Chelsea, London, adding depth to its historical context. The watercolour is in excellent condition, with well-preserved colours and strong paper, showing no significant damage or restoration. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a distinguished example of early 19th-century British portraiture, ideal for collectors of historical portraits, watercolours, and Georgian-era art.
A Cased Ceramic Portrait Miniature of Two Children, mid-19th Century, accompanies this painting, which came from the same house in Chelsea, London.
A finely hand-painted portrait miniature on ceramic, depicting two children, a young girl in a pale dress holding a basket and a boy behind her. The surface shows typical age-related craquelure and wear, but much of the original colour remains visible.
Presented in its original period hinged case with velvet lining, in the manner of daguerreotype and ambrotype photographic portraits. While frequently mistaken for early photographic processes, this example is a painted ceramic miniature rather than a daguerreotype.
Image with surface cracks and losses consistent with age; case worn but structurally sound.
