Rare Victorian Mahogany Sympiesometer by T. Hemsley, Tower Hill, London, Early 19th Century
A fine and rare Victorian sympiesometer by T. Hemsley of Tower Hill, London, an important maker of early meteorological instruments. The sympiesometer was developed as a compact alternative to the mercury barometer, particularly favoured for marine and domestic use during the early 19th century.
This example is housed in its original mahogany case with bevelled glass, fitted with a silvered scale, mercury thermometer, and characteristic U-shaped tube with sliding adjustment scale. The lower section features the adjustable kidney-shaped aperture engraved with barometric readings, along with a subsidiary dial.
Instruments by Hemsley are increasingly scarce and sought after by collectors of early scientific and maritime instruments. This piece combines historical importance with strong decorative appeal, making it suitable for both serious collections and traditional interiors.
Good antique condition overall, showing honest age-related wear consistent with early 19th-century instruments. The mahogany case and glass are well preserved with minor surface marks. Scales and engraving remain clear and legible.
Please note: the instrument is sold without mercury and is not guaranteed to be in working order, as is standard with antique barometers. Suitable for display or professional restoration if desired.
Dimensions: Height: 53 cm (approximately 21 inches)

Clocks, Mantle clocks, music boxes, and other similar items may require service after transportation and are sold as decorative pieces. Please note, whilst clocks currently work, during transport, all clocks are moved around a lot, and therefore, they may require setting up upon receiving them, as well as the possibility of requiring professional assistance or service, as they can get ‘stuck’. There is no guarantee that the clock will work smoothly after it has been transported. Leans Gallery does not guarantee any barometers, clocks, or music boxes to be in working order.
