Admiral Fitzroy’s Weather Station Barometer – Late 19th / Early 20th Century
An Exceptional Scientific Antique – Rare & Museum Quality

A superb and rare example of a late 19th to early 20th century Admiral Fitzroy oak-cased weather station, this piece exemplifies the refinement and functionality of Victorian era meteorological instruments. Finely constructed in solid oak, it combines a mercurial barometer, a spirit thermometer, and a detailed atmospheric pressure guide, all elegantly framed behind a glazed front panel.
The silvered scale is finely printed with Admiral Fitzroy’s detailed forecasting remarks, including his famous interpretations for rising and falling pressure. This particular instrument also features the original thermometer by J. Prior of Hastings, a known regional maker of the period, and retains a beautifully turned hemispherical cistern cover and polished brass fittings.
The main tube—manually operated—displays the intricate mechanics and craftsmanship of the era. It terminates in a mahogany cistern, now carefully concealed for both protection and presentation. Please note: the barometer tube has been emptied of mercury in accordance with modern safety and shipping regulations, and can be refilled by a qualified horologist at the buyer’s end.
This piece is not only a scientific relic but a statement of Victorian design and ingenuity. It is sold as a decorative collector’s item and may require adjustment or calibration upon installation.
