Description
Louis Philippe Ormolu-Mounted Ebonised Portico Mantel Clock, Second Quarter 19th Century
A refined and elegant Louis Philippe period ormolu-mounted ebonised portico mantel clock dating to the second quarter of the 19th century. This unsigned French timepiece is a fine example of classical architectural design translated into horology.
The clock is fitted with an eight-day counterwheel bell-striking movement incorporating an anchor escapement. The movement is regulated by a decorative gridiron pendulum featuring a finely cast floral rosette bob and a serpent-decorated yoke. The backplate is stamped 948. The clock retains its original key and pendulum.
The circular silvered brass dial is engine-turned and displays Roman numerals, complemented by pierced blued steel hands. An ornate floral cast ormolu bezel frames the dial, enhancing its visual richness.
The architectural case features a projecting ogee cornice above a tablet upstand entablature. The lintel is centred with a basket of flowers motif surrounded by inhabited foliate scrollwork in finely cast and chased ormolu. Four Roman Doric columns, with engine-turned gilt caps and bases, support the upper structure and define the elegant portico form. The plinth base is decorated with a matching foliate scroll mount and stands on a canted skirt with compressed bun feet.
Measuring approximately 50 cm (19.75 inches) high, 26 cm (10.25 inches) wide, and 14.5 cm (5.75 inches) deep, this distinguished clock combines classical symmetry with rich decorative detail. Having been in storage for several years, it may benefit from a professional service to ensure optimal operation.
A superb and decorative example of Louis Philippe horology, ideal for collectors of fine 19th-century French clocks.
