19th C Tanjore Reverse Glass Painting Lord Krishna with Consorts Antique Indian Art

Lord Krishna with Consorts Rukmini and Satyabhama
South India (Tanjore tradition), 19th century
Reverse painting on glass

This richly coloured reverse glass painting depicts Lord Krishna standing affectionately between his consorts, Rukmini and Satyabhama, within an ornate palace interior. The composition conveys divine intimacy and royal splendour, with Krishna adorned in traditional attire and jewel ornamentation, while the queens display elaborate costume detailing and refined facial modelling.

Executed using the reverse glass technique — whereby pigments and metallic embellishments are applied in reverse order on the back of glass — the painting achieves exceptional luminosity, clarity, and surface brilliance. This medium was introduced to India in the late 18th century through Chinese trade routes and flourished particularly in South India, notably in Tanjore, during the 19th century.

Tanjore reverse glass paintings are celebrated for their bold colour palette, decorative richness, and narrative religious imagery, often depicting Hindu deities, royal court scenes, and ceremonial compositions. The present work exemplifies these qualities through its vibrant palette, architectural detailing, and symmetrical figural arrangement.

The painting is housed in its original wooden frame, contributing to its historical integrity and display presence.
