Description

A Pair of Antique Royal Worcester Porcelain Figures – James Hadley Design in the Kate Greenaway Style, circa 1880–1900

A charming and finely modelled pair of antique Royal Worcester porcelain figures, attributed to the renowned modeller James Hadley, dating from the late Victorian period, circa 1880–1900. Executed in the delightful Kate Greenaway style, these figures beautifully capture the innocence and romantic sentiment of childhood so popular in late 19th-century decorative arts.

The boy is seated upon a naturalistic tree stump, dressed in period attire with a wide-brimmed hat, jacket and breeches, delicately playing a flute. His expressive features and the finely detailed folds of his garments reflect Hadley’s accomplished modelling and the refined craftsmanship of Royal Worcester’s golden era. The accompanying girl stands gracefully in a playful dancing pose, lifting her skirt slightly as she steps forward, dressed in a flowing high-waisted gown with puffed sleeves and a bonnet. Her lively expression and fluid posture are rendered with remarkable delicacy.

Both figures are finished in a warm ivory-toned glaze with subtle hand-applied gilded highlights and naturalistic bases, standing approximately 9 inches in height. The pair exemplifies the romanticism, elegance and technical excellence associated with Royal Worcester during its most celebrated period.

Provenance: Private collection, England.

Size 25 x 12 cm – 9.7 x 4.8 inches (Boy) – 24 x 4.7 inches (Girl)
