Rare Victorian Silver Pocket Thermometer with Swivel Case, Late 19th Century

A fine and unusual Victorian pocket thermometer dating to the late 19th century, elegantly housed in a cylindrical silver case with an ingenious swivel-opening design. When closed, the instrument presents as a compact and refined capsule, while a simple twist reveals the internal thermometer, protected by a hinged engraved cover—an excellent example of practical ingenuity combined with decorative craftsmanship.

The exterior case is richly embellished with intricate foliate engraving, centred by an oval cartouche engraved with a flowing monogram, adding a personal and highly decorative element. The silver casing shows softly worn hallmarks, consistent with age, further supporting its late Victorian origin. A suspension ring to the top indicates it was intended for pocket watch chains or chatelaines, emphasising its portability and everyday use.

Inside, the thermometer retains a clear and well-defined scale ranging from 10 to 110 degrees, with sharp, legible numerals. The red liquid column remains intact and visible, a testament to the quality of manufacture and careful preservation. The swivel mechanism operates smoothly, neatly enclosing the instrument for protection when not in use.

Such pocket thermometers were produced by specialist makers in both England and America during the late 19th century, two makers of this item that are recorded in Antique books that were referred to are Wright & Davies of London and Taylor Bros, Rochester, N.Y., USA

Condition is very good for its age, with light surface wear, minor rubbing to the silver and hallmarks, and gentle age-related marks throughout. These do not detract from its overall appeal but rather enhance its authentic antique character. The mechanism functions well, and the instrument displays beautifully.

A rare and highly collectable piece of Victorian scientific equipment, combining elegant design, practical function, and historical interest, ideal for collectors of antique instruments, horological items, or fine Victorian silver.

Please note, whilst clocks currently work, during transport, all clocks are moved around a lot, and therefore, they may require setting up upon receiving them, as well as the possibility of requiring professional assistance or service, as they can get ‘stuck’. There is no guarantee that the clock will work smoothly after it has been transported. Leans Gallery does not guarantee any barometers, clocks, or music boxes to be in working order.
