Description

Antique German Porcelain Mantel Clock

Volkstedt Porcelain Mantel Clock with Cherubs
German, Thuringia, late 19th century

A charming late nineteenth-century German porcelain mantel clock produced in the celebrated porcelain factories of Volkstedt, Thuringia. The clock is modelled in the Rococo revival taste, with an elegant and flowing form enriched by scrolling ornament, delicate pastel colouring, and gilt highlights.

The upper section is beautifully adorned with two playful cherubs seated together above the dial, their expressive poses adding a lively and decorative element to the composition. Below, the case is richly moulded with rocaille scrollwork and soft blush pink panels set against an ivory ground, further enhanced by hand-painted floral decoration and gilded accents typical of fine Thuringian porcelain of the period.

The circular enamel dial is decorated with delicate floral garlands and Arabic numerals, framed by a gilt metal bezel. The clock retains its winding key and houses a traditional mechanical movement accessed from the rear.

The underside bears the characteristic Volkstedt underglaze mark together with impressed model numbers, confirming its origin in the renowned Thuringian porcelain workshops of Germany during the late nineteenth century.

An elegant and decorative example of German porcelain clock making, combining fine sculptural modelling with practical timekeeping. Pieces of this type were highly popular in European interiors during the Victorian and Belle Époque periods and remain attractive decorative objects today.

A delightful addition to any collection of antique clocks, German porcelain, or Rococo revival decorative arts.

Porcelain body in very good antique condition, Minor surface wear and light rubbing consistent with age, Gilding shows gentle softening in places, appropriate for period, No obvious cracks or restorations observed, some chips and a small wing to the putti missing, Dial clean and legible with attractive hand-painted detail, Movement winds and is supplied with key (timekeeping not guaranteed, as is standard with antique clocks)

Overall, the clock presents exceptionally well and retains strong visual and decorative appeal.
