A finely executed academic study of a standing male nude, depicted in three-quarter profile and holding a staff, painted in the manner of William Etty R.A. (1787–1849). The composition reflects the strong influence of mid-19th century British academic training, with careful attention to anatomical modelling, warm flesh tones, and a dark, atmospheric background characteristic of life studies from the period.

The handling of light across the torso and shoulders demonstrates confident draughtsmanship and an understanding of classical figure painting traditions associated with Etty and his contemporaries. The presence of a Winsor & Newton canvas stamp to the reverse supports a 19th-century date, consistent with materials used by British artists of the era.

Presented unframed. The surface shows age-related wear, minor abrasions, and areas of thinning consistent with its period, but it remains a compelling and evocative example of Victorian academic figure painting.

Size 54.5 x 75 cm – 21.5 x 29.5 inches
