Shot Enamels Porcelain

This superb and rare pair of Royal Worcester porcelain figurines, titled Music, depicts two idealised Greek musicians—one playing cymbals, the other a lute—and represents the height of Royal Worcester’s figural production in the early 20th century.

The models were created by James Hadley, one of Royal Worcester’s most celebrated sculptors, renowned for his ability to convey movement, grace, and narrative through porcelain. The figures are marked “Worcester – Shot Enamels” and bear the model numbers 1827 and 1828, with factory date codes corresponding to 1911.

Each figure is exquisitely modelled, with flowing drapery rendered in soft, sinuous folds that suggest rhythm and musical motion. The restrained pastel palette, combined with the subtle “shot enamel” surface finish, creates a refined play of light and tone across the garments. Both figures stand barefoot upon naturalistic rocky bases, further enhancing their classical character.

Signed to the base by James Hadley, these figurines exemplify the sculptural sophistication and technical excellence for which Royal Worcester is internationally admired. Pairs of this quality and completeness are increasingly scarce and are highly sought after by collectors of fine English porcelain.
