Watercolour, N. Chalmers (British School), dated 1921

 This finely observed still life watercolour depicts a classic table top arrangement of fruit and wine, rendered with calm restraint and balanced composition. A bowl of ripe fruit is set alongside a wine bottle and glass, with bread placed in the foreground, evoking the enduring still-life tradition rooted in harmony, nourishment, and quiet domesticity.

Executed in 1921 and signed by N. Chalmers, the work reflects the post-Edwardian taste for carefully composed interiors and tonal subtlety, with soft washes and controlled light lending depth and realism. Presented in an elegant gilt frame and glazed, the painting has a strong decorative appeal while remaining true to its early 20th-century origins.

 The watercolour is in very good vintage condition, with light, even age toning consistent with its date. No visible tears or losses. Some surface dulling is visible due to dust beneath the glazing; the colours would appear brighter and clearer following routine professional cleaning of the glass. The gilt frame shows minor wear and patina commensurate with age. Overall, the piece displays attractiveness and honesty.
