This striking oil painting represents Saint Raphael the Archangel, executed in the celebrated tradition of the Cusco (Cuzco) School, one of the most important artistic movements of colonial and post-colonial Latin America. Developed in Peru from the late 17th century onward, the Cusco School fused European Baroque religious imagery with indigenous Andean symbolism, decorative richness, and distinctive colour palettes.
Saint Raphael is depicted wearing lavishly ornamented garments embellished with metallic bronze leaf, a technique known as brocateado, imitating embroidered textiles and ceremonial armour. The archangel holds the symbolic fish associated with the Book of Tobit, referencing healing, protection, and divine guidance. The background landscape and floral ornamentation reinforce the Andean aesthetic that distinguishes Cusqueña painting from European counterparts.
Works of this type were produced by indigenous and mestizo workshops for churches, private devotion, and export to Europe and the Americas. Today, authentic Cusco School archangel paintings are increasingly scarce and sought after by collectors, museums, and scholars of colonial art.
