Exquisite Antique Georgian Mahogany Stick Barometer by J. Whisker, York, c. late 19th C
This antique barometer is a stunning example of Georgian craftsmanship, featuring a beautifully crafted mahogany case with herringbone veneer and boxwood line inlays. The broken pediment sits atop the silvered registered plate, which is protected behind a glazed door. The manually operated vernier is a testament to the intricate mechanics of this barometer.
The exposed tube terminates with a mahogany cistern, concealed behind a turned hemispherical mahogany cistern cover. This piece is attributed to J. Whisker of York, a renowned clockmaker and instrument maker who worked under his father Matthew before taking over the business in 1804. Unfortunately, there is no labelling on the piece, but its design and craftsmanship are consistent with Whisker’s style.
The paper cutting of a similar item sold a few years back is attached, providing a valuable reference point for potential buyers. This barometer is a rare and beautiful piece that would be a treasured addition to any collection of antique scientific instruments or Georgian-era antiques.

This remarkable device is used to measure atmospheric pressure changes as an indicator of changes in the weather. Today, weather stations around the world use stick barometers for accurate forecasting, and for those of us who love nostalgia, an antique barometer provides the same information in a masterfully crafted case.
Evangelista Torricelli is credited with inventing the first barometer in 1643. A physician and mathematician, Torricelli had moved to Florence to assist Galileo. While performing various experiments concerning the nature of air and vacuums, he uncovered the basic principle of the barometer design. Furthermore, he used m….y in his vacuum experiments and discovered that the height of the m….y, which changed from day to day, was related to changes in atmospheric pressure. Soon, his principles were accepted by scientists throughout the continent.
