WWI Helmet – Original German WWI Prussian M1895 Artillery Pickelhaube Helmet – Kugelhelm
Description
A Rare, Complete Imperial German Artillery Pickelhaube, Ready to Display
Few pieces of militaria command a room like an original Pickelhaube. This Imperial German Prussian M1895 Artillery Kugelhelm is a complete, all-original example issued to other ranks (Mannschaften), dating to the pre-First World War period and carried into early WWI service. It is the kind of piece serious collectors spend years searching for.
What Makes This Example Exceptional
- Complete with all original components — detachable Kugel (ball-top) finial, black lacquered leather body, and correct brass fittings throughout
- Prussian spread eagle plate bearing the “FR” cipher and the banner “Mit Gott für König und Vaterland”, surmounted by the royal crown — authentic Prussian issue
- Fully functional Kugel finial — removable to allow for parade plume attachment, exactly as originally intended
- Rich, developed patina — honest service wear that enhances rather than detracts from its authenticity and display presence
Condition
Overall condition is very good for its age. The lacquer and fittings show honest service wear consistent with a working military helmet of this period. No significant damage. Some elements have been sympathetically restored or replaced, whilst the helmet retains its original character throughout. A solid, displayable example that would grace any serious militaria collection.
Provenance & Historical Context
Country of origin: Germany | Period: c.1895–1918
The Pickelhaube is one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable forms of Imperial German military headgear. This artillery variant — identified by its distinctive Kugel finial in place of the infantry spike — represents the Prussian Artillery branch at the height of the German Empire, from the late 19th century through the First World War. Pieces of this completeness and quality are increasingly difficult to source.
