Description
Bavarian Model 1895 Pickelhaube – Attributed to 3rd Jäger Regiment
Imperial German, late 19th–early 20th century
A well-preserved Bavarian M1895 Pickelhaube, constructed of blackened leather with polished nickel fittings, fixed spike, and the crowned twin-lion Bavarian state wappen. The interior retains its original leather liner and spike reinforcement disc, with a period-style replacement chinstrap fitted to M95 posts.
The rear visor bears an ink-applied marking interpreted as “3 J.R.,” consistent with field or soldier-applied identification for the 3rd Jäger Regiment or related Bavarian light infantry formation. While not an arsenal-stamped depot mark, this attribution aligns with the helmet’s Bavarian fittings and con-figuration. The shell shows age-appropriate lacquer checking and patina typical of service-used exam-ples from the period.
A representative piece of Bavaria’s distinct military identity within the wider Imperial German Army, this helmet stands as a collectable example of state-issued headgear with links to specialist light infan-try roles during the late Imperial era.
Condition:
Good, with period-consistent wear to leather and metal fittings; interior liner original; chinstrap re-placed; markings visible inside rear visor.
Dimensions: Standard enlisted M95 proportions
Provenance: Private collection
Period: c. 1895–1914
