Marine Barometer Victorian Portuguese

Antique Portuguese Navy Brass Marine Barometer RN Desterro Lisbon Victorian 97cm

This impressive Victorian marine barometer was manufactured in Lisbon for naval or maritime use and bears the marking “R.N. Desterro, Lisbon, Portugal.” Instruments associated with Portuguese naval supply are notably rare survivors, reflecting Portugal’s important maritime heritage and long tradition of navigation and ocean trade.

The barometer is housed in a substantial full-length brass case with an original glazed viewing window and a clearly graduated atmospheric scale with English weather indications. Its commanding vertical form and robust construction were designed to withstand shipboard conditions while providing reliable atmospheric readings critical for navigation and weather forecasting.

Such large-format brass marine barometers were typically installed aboard naval vessels, merchant ships, or in port authority offices. Surviving examples in complete condition and strong visual presence are increasingly difficult to obtain and are highly sought after by collectors of scientific instruments, maritime history, and interior designers seeking statement decorative pieces.

The instrument presents as both a functional navigational artefact and an important historical object from the late Victorian maritime era.
