Rare 14th-Century Islamic Copper Alloy Oil Lamp with Bird-Form Handle

This exceptional 14th-century Islamic oil lamp is a rare and evocative survival from the medieval Islamic world. Cast and engraved in a copper alloy, the lamp features a closed body design inspired by earlier Byzantine prototypes, reflecting the cultural and artistic exchanges of the period.

The lamp is formed with four covered wick spouts, each terminating in a distinctive spade-shaped mouth, allowing for controlled and even illumination. A small thumb piece is positioned at the top, while the impressive large ring handle is surmounted by a stylised bird figure, an elegant and symbolic decorative element that enhances both function and visual appeal.

The surface retains a rich, naturally aged patina, with traces of engraving and wear consistent with centuries of use, lending the piece great authenticity and character. The conical foot is decorated with engraved geometric motifs, typical of Islamic metalwork of the period.

This lamp is not only a functional lighting object but also a highly decorative and historically significant artefact, offering insight into medieval Islamic craftsmanship and daily life. It would make a distinguished addition to any collection of Islamic art, early metalwork, or archaeological antiquities.
