Description

Royal Worcester Porcelain Figure of a Grecian Water Carrier Maiden

Attributed to the Studio of James Hadley • Circa 1890–1910 • Height: 51.5 cm

An exceptional and unusually large Royal Worcester porcelain figure of a Grecian water carrier maiden — a work of rare sculptural ambition that stands among the finest figural productions of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

The composition presents a classical female figure in elegant contrapposto, her flowing robes rendered with extraordinary naturalism. An amphora rests upon her head; a secondary vessel is held gracefully at her side. The fluid treatment of the drapery, with its layered folds and refined surface modelling, is closely associated with James Hadley, the pre-eminent modeller at the Royal Worcester factory, whose influence defined the character of its figural output throughout this era.

The restrained palette of ivory and softly tinted green allows the sculptural form to speak for itself — a deliberate neoclassical choice that draws on ancient Greek prototypes and the enduring prestige of Grand Tour aesthetics. The result is a figure of quiet authority: decorative without excess, scholarly without austerity.

At 51.5 cm, the scale of this piece is particularly significant. Large Royal Worcester figures of this type were produced in limited numbers and intended for prominent display within the most refined interiors of the period. They are considerably scarcer than standard cabinet pieces and command serious collector attention.

The underside bears the Royal Worcester crown mark together with a registration reference, consistent with late Victorian to Edwardian production.
