Description
Royal Worcester Porcelain Figure of a Grecian Water Carrier Maiden, Attributed to the Studio of James Hadley, circa 1890–1910
An exceptional and unusually large Royal Worcester porcelain figure representing a Grecian water carrier maiden, standing at an impressive 51.5 cm in height. This finely modelled figure exemplifies the refined neoclassical aesthetic that defined Royal Worcester’s most accomplished sculptural works of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The composition depicts a classical female figure gracefully poised in contrapposto, draped in flowing robes and balancing an amphora upon her head, while holding a secondary vessel at her side. The treatment of the drapery, with its fluid movement and naturalistic folds, demonstrates a high level of sculptural sophistication closely associated with the work of the Worcester modeller James Hadley, whose influence dominated the factory’s figural production during this period.
The restrained palette of ivory and softly tinted green enhances the sculptural clarity of the form, allowing the elegance of the modelling to take precedence over surface decoration. This approach reflects the broader neoclassical revival of the period, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek prototypes and the enduring influence of Grand Tour aesthetics.
The scale of the figure is particularly noteworthy. Large Royal Worcester figures of this type are considerably scarcer than standard cabinet pieces and were often produced in limited numbers, intended for prominent display within refined interiors.
The underside bears the Royal Worcester crown mark together with a registration reference, consistent with production in the late Victorian to Edwardian period.
This figure represents a highly decorative yet academically grounded example of English porcelain at its most ambitious, combining sculptural refinement, classical inspiration, and technical excellence.
