This attractive pair of oil paintings depicts Highland cattle grazing in the Scottish landscape, each composition animated by subtly different groupings of cattle set against rolling moorland and distant hills. One scene includes a watchful sheepdog, adding narrative interest and a sense of rural life.

Both works are signed J. M. Grandale, and are executed in oil on paper laid on board, a common and practical support for landscape painters working en plein air or in the studio during the early to mid-20th century. Glazed and ready to hang, overall, the pair presents cleanly and attractively, particularly effective when displayed together.
