Description

Candlestick, Lamp Stand, Belgian Giltwood, and Gesso, 1900

This striking giltwood and gesso candlestick stand, dating to circa 1900, is a finely carved decorative piece with strong architectural presence. Originally conceived as a candlestick, it was later converted for use as a lamp stand and is offered without wiring, allowing the buyer the flexibility to use it either as a candle holder or to reconfigure it as a lamp if desired.

Standing approximately 25 inches (63 cm) high, the piece features a richly detailed shaft rising from an ornate base, lavishly carved with scrolling foliage and floral motifs. The original gilded surface and gesso work retain a pleasing aged patina, enhancing the character and authenticity of the piece.

Found in Belgium, this candlestick reflects the refined decorative taste of the late 19th to early 20th century and would serve equally well as a statement decorative object, an altar-style candlestick, or a lamp base in a traditional or eclectic interior.
