“The Ever to be Lament’d Death of Lord Nelson”

Hand-coloured commemorative mezzotint under glass, in original wooden frame

This atmospheric patriotic image depicts the fatal wounding of Admiral Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, one of the most iconic moments in British naval history. The scene shows the mortally injured admiral being supported by fellow officers on the quarterdeck of HMS Victory, while battle rages in the background.

Following Nelson’s death, such images were widely produced for domestic display, serving both as memorials and symbols of national pride. These prints were often hand-coloured and mounted behind glass, sometimes with reverse-painted details, and framed for household interiors during the Regency period.

The survival of both the glass and the original frame enhances the historical integrity and decorative appeal of this example. The rich patina and surface wear contribute to its authentic period character, making it a highly evocative piece of early 19th-century British commemorative art.
