Description
Ernest Cox (1909–1938) – Cattle in Wilford, Nottinghamshire | Oil on Board
Modern British oil painting by the listed artist Ernest Cox (1909–1938). A Nottingham-based painter, Cox is best known for his landscape work and was an active and respected exhibitor, showing no fewer than 56 works at Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery during his career.
Painted circa the 1930s, Cattle in Wilford depicts a tranquil pastoral scene on the outskirts of Nottingham. Cattle graze beneath mature trees, with distant farm buildings and open fields rendered in rich, expressive brushwork. The artist’s confident handling of colour and light brings warmth and depth to the composition, capturing the quiet rhythm of rural life.
The painting is executed in oil on board and remains in its original, untouched condition, preserving the freshness and integrity of the artist’s work. It is signed and presented in a period gilt frame, making it ready to hang and enjoy immediately.
Although little is widely published about Ernest Cox, his work is represented in public collections, including a recorded example on the BBC Your Paintings project, confirming his place within the canon of Modern British art. This painting is a strong and evocative example of his work and would make an excellent addition to any collection of British landscape painting.
