Description
Ernest Cox (1909–1938), Cattle in Wilford, Nottinghamshire, Oil on Board
This accomplished oil on board landscape depicts cattle grazing in a meadow at Wilford, Nottingham, and is the work of the British painter Ernest Cox (1909–1938). Executed in the 1930s, the painting reflects Cox’s sensitivity to the rural scenery of Nottinghamshire and his confident handling of light, atmosphere, and natural colour.
The composition centres on a mature tree anchoring the foreground, beneath which cattle are quietly observed in a sunlit pasture. Beyond, farm buildings and hedgerows recede gently into the distance, creating a balanced and tranquil rural scene. The brushwork is lively yet controlled, with textured passages in the foliage and grass contrasting effectively with softer treatment in the sky and middle distance.
Ernest Cox was primarily a landscape painter who lived and worked in Nottingham. He was a frequent exhibitor, showing no fewer than 56 times at Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery, and his work is recorded in public collections, including an example listed on the BBC Your Paintings (now Art UK) platform, confirming his status as a recognised Modern British regional artist.
The painting is signed and presented in a period gilt frame, enhancing its decorative appeal while remaining sympathetic to the work’s date and character.
